What is Melasma, and How is it Different from Blemishes?

Melasma differs from a simple phenomenon where melanin pigment is excessively produced and stains the skin.

Pigment cells called melanocytes, which produce melanin in the deeper layers of the skin, become abnormally activated.

The produced melanin pigment spreads over a wide area and shows a pattern of recurrent appearance.

This can be understood as a complex pigmentary disorder that affects the dermal layer and persists long-term.

Particularly, external factors such as UV exposure and hormonal changes act as important causes that stimulate melanocytes.

At this time, microscopic inflammatory responses and vascular-related factors within the skin complexly influence it.

Unlike typical mole formations, it has the characteristic of pigment spreading in a blurry, broad pattern.
